Colour trends Part II

Morning friends, are you ready for some more colour inspiration? Last week I featured the colour of the 2012 and two key colour trends as described by ColourFutures 12. Here are the remaining three key colour trends, thanks again to Dulux for sharing the inspiration with us.

One small seed is a theme about our personal connection with nature and the potential of a small seed and growth. It invites nature into our homes and with the use of these colours, creates an indoor garden of delight. The colour palette is pale, fresh pastels, watery greens, with dark soil and bright blossom colours as counterweights.

The next theme is Rediscovered Heroes which encourages us to appreciate the beauty and possibilities in the more ordinary and industrial things that surround us and that are seemingly worthless, especially in a time of economic struggle. Abandoned buildings, factory spaces, even an old office building have elements that can inspire. The colour palette is inspired by down-to-earth qualities and a masculine aesthetic, think denim blues, rusty metal tones, concrete greys and pops of colour from bright electrical wires and pipe work.

The final theme is Different worlds which takes inspiration from the state-of-the-art technology that we experience these days which allows us to 'be' in different worlds or realities at the same time with very little effort. It's a mix of digital, surreal and virtual and the colours associated with this trend are a mix of extreme colours like velvet bright blues and reds against more ethereal and translucent pastels.

O.live, one of my favourite décor shops in town, has opened a second branch in Woodstock. It's a beautiful space with light pouring in and so much character. Wooden floors, peeling walls and rustic shelves packed with an eclectic array from gorgeous glassware to ceramics, vintage finds, cushions, linen and much more. It's situated within The Woodstock Foundry, a new creative and retail hub which is due to have it's big opening on the 23rd of Feb. It looks like it's going to be a great spot. With Dear rae and West Street Café for neighbours, O.live makes for a perfect outing.

Colour trends 2012

Morning friends! Ready for a new week? Thought I'd share some colour inspiration with you today thanks to Dulux who sent me a a beautiful and inspiring ColourFutures 12 book which introduces key colour palette trends for 2012.

The colour of the year is said to be a vibrant and warm shade of red, perfect for both accent and feature walls. Red is a powerful mood lifter and held in high regard world wide, so it makes sense that this colour takes center stage.

ColourFutures 12 also lists five key colour trends, I'll feature two today and the rest next week, so look out for that! The first trend is Delicate Mix, I particularly love this colour palette with it's subtle and understated yet luxurious feel. Gorgeous corals, nude pinks and elegant neutrals paired with hints of forged iron steel, copper, wood and polished concrete.

Another trend is Living Scrapbook which reflects our current tendencies towards social media, sharing, collecting and the need to be more quirky and reflect our selves. It's a balanced, warm and charming palette with hints of craft paper and mature pastels. Modern yet slightly non-mainstream.

Yesterday I mentioned that my own work space was in need of a facelift so when I saw these photos of Lotta Jansdotter's studio over on Design*Sponge, I was suitably inspired. This look is a little more 'me' than the beautiful images I posted yesterday which realistically were too minimalistic for me... I have a lot of clutter! Simplictity needed

More scandi inspiration today. I think what appeals to me about this style is that it feels clean, fresh and light. Just a simple but striking colour palette combined with classic furniture pieces and plenty of wooden elements. The work space below is looking really appealing to me because my own work space looks like an explosion of colour and just too many different eclectic pieces in a rather small space! All I want is a calm and soothing space, perhaps i better do some de-cluttering this weekend? Perhaps I'll share a photo on my facebook page and you'll see what I mean! I'm sure many of you will already have seen the latest issue of est but I thought I'd mention it for those of you who might not have heard about it because it really is a must read! This issue takes inspiration from the Scandinavian countries and is jam packed with gorgeous homes and features. I particularly loved the Icelandic home, seeing Tine K's home, finding out about Candice Lake, a fantastic street style photographer and reading the Stockholm guide by none other than Joanna of simple blueprint. With summer in full swing upon us, the beautiful sunny season is abound with incredible outdoor summery weddings! Pretty pastels, soft pinks & romantic hues are a very popular trend with all weddings and especially those during our summer season.

The colour palette gives the décor a playful feel, yet is still very elegant and feminine at the same time. The bright pinks are eye catching and add lovely colour pops to the décor. ‘Less is more’ and by using the right flowers and colours and displaying them creatively, it can turn your wedding into a perfectly decorated and whimsical ensemble.

Smitten

Last week I popped into Smitten, a gorgeous recently opened boutique in Farriers Centre. Smitten is jam packed full of beautiful goodies from homeware to clothing, jewellery and more. Perfect for gifts, treating yourself or just taking in the inspiration. It's one of those boutiques where you walk in and immediately fall in love with everything and just can't seem to leave! The boutique is owned by Tracey and Charlene, two sisters who clearly have a eye for pretty décor, styling and picking out the right merchandise. Smitten looks out onto the beautiful Farriers garden where afterwards you can enjoy a delicious coffee and cake at High Tea. It makes for a lovely outing so make a note to visit on your next free day!

Inspiring business cards

Apart from collecting useful business cards, I also love collecting inspiring ones that are beautifully put together. I think illustrated cards can be really pretty but you have to choose the correct image and not overdo it for it to be effective. It seems these days though that the most popular trend is just using a simple colour palette and an interesting font. And hand scripted, cursive fonts are definitely the flavour of the day. Foodie blogs ~ Part II

I thought I'd continue sharing my favourite foodie blogs with you (You can see Part I here). These ladies are all just so talented, they can cook up a storm, style their own shoots beautifully and take fantastic photos. They continually amaze me!

So first up is the fabulous desserts for breakfast written by Stephanie, a food and travel photographer from California. Stephanie shares fabulous and enticing dessert recipes and says that she actually eats almost solely desserts for breakfast!

Next up is Nectar written by Jen Altman. Jen is also a photographer and her blog is a lovely mix of recipes, photography and snippets of her family life. I love that she features her three daughters in her styling. It's a refreshing read full of tempting recipes!

Katie is a Sydney based photographer and her blog, What Katie Ate, is also another gem. Everything is beautifully presented and put together. Tasty, hearty food and insights into Sydney life. Katie is currently working on her first cookbook, it's sure to be a winner.

Mulberry does seaside candy

Have you seen Mulberry's Spring 2012 campaign yet? It was shot by the amazing Tim Walker at Brighton Beach with the most incredible giant size props. Oversized ice cream cones and colourful candy make for an infinitely fun and playful shoot. And then of course gorgeous spring clothing from Mulberry complete the look. What's not to love about this creative campaign?!

Why not get inspired by this campaign and bring some candy colour into your home. I could do with all of these but in particular I'm dreaming about the fabulous Mexican Acapulco chair. Consol Solar Jar

Last week Consol sent me one of their brand new Solar Jars to try out and I have to say it's a real winner! This clever solar-powered light offers almost six hours of light before needing to be recharged in the sun. It's perfect for outdoor dinners, sundowners on the beach or camping, no more struggling with tea lights that constantly get blown out by the breeze! Plus it comes in the ever popular Consol glass jar. A collection of these would be ideal to light up a garden path for a party or wedding and of course you can hang them from a tree for a magical look. The decorating options are endless!

They retail from R120 and are available from Consol retail outlets in Stellenbosch and Woodmead or you can buy them online. I think this would make an ideal gift and of course it's a great solution to the many South African homes without proper electricity.

It's the last full week of January, this month has just flown by and I still have so much to catch up on. I better make sure that this week is super productive. How have you found January, have you settled into 2012 yet?

Today I thought I'd share the some really incredible, folk inspired designs by Klaus Haapaniemi, a fairly new UK design studio set up by artist Klaus Haapaniemi and designer Mia Wallenius. "Their design approach is influenced by nature, Finnish folklore, fantasy and traditional decorative arts with a modern twist." Just loving these rather whimsical designs. The Larder

Yesterday I popped into The Larder in Diep River, what a fabulous new foodie find! Situated within Block & Chisel, The Larder is a lovely, relaxing cafe serving wholesome and delicious meals whipped up by Sonja and her team. It's a small and inviting spot with quirky decor, a bit of a vintage touch and attention to detail. The table numbers are handwritten on wooden spoons, such a great touch! Most of the food is made on the premises from scratch ensuring fresh and authentic food that you won't find anywhere else. The menu changes daily in keeping with seasonal fresh, organic produce plus they serve Truth coffee, so this is definitely going to be a new fave of mine!

I recently came across Jenna Rose, a textile studio based in Ontario. I fell in love with their screen printed textiles and handmade pieces. I find both the designs and colours really appealing. Holiday catch up

Hi friends! Well, I'm finally back from my holiday and definitely ready to get back to work after a relaxing and fabulous trip. We spent the first part in Hermanus and then took a road trip up towards the Garden Route stopping and exploring along the way. Many beautiful, historic homes and buildings and incredible churches but definitely a lack of quality cappuccinos!

Our final destination was The River Shack, a rustic cottage on a river mouth just outside Mossel Bay. A week in this idyllic spot, swimming daily and enjoying nature was just what I needed. So that's a bit about my holiday, I'm now off to catch up on all my blog reading and see what you've been up to! So happy to be back and to get going with 2012!

Summer colour!

Well, summer is definitely here and I'm loving it of course! My holiday is coming to an end so I'm definitely going to make the most of it this weekend. If you're on the other side of the world though, try injecting some bold colour into your wardrobe or home for an instant summer lift. Fresh flowers and accessories are definitely the easiest way to achieve immediate extra colour. Have a happy weekend!

Capanna

I'm madly in love with the look of Capanna, a pizzeria in Athens, Greece; designed by K-Studio. It's a wonderful mix of traditional and new with plenty of natural, wooden elements and a hint of industrial. Well, that's quite an array of contrasting adjectives but that's how I see it! The wooden shutters, Morrocan tiles and clusters of pendant lights are all just incredible. I would love to dine in this welcoming space.

How about a fun tropical inspired palette to liven things up?! These seemingly bold and clashing colours can actually work perfectly together if used in the right way. What do you think? I adore both of these table settings, they're totally different and yet both are so appealing. Since I normally take the colour route, I think I'd pick the white and silver setting for a special Christmas dinner but then again I do love that striking chevron table cloth! I can't believe it's Friday already, this week has flown by and that means it's Christmas eve tomorrow already. We are celebrating with my family on Christmas eve and then with my boyfriend's family on Christmas day. I'm so looking forward to it! I found these adorable reindeer paper serviettes (from Pick 'n Pay, would you believe it?!) which I think I'll take along for a fun touch.

DIY Christmas wreath

A while ago, I told you my grand plan for making a Christmas wreath out of some dried penny gum, so I thought I'd share some pics of how it turned out. For a fun touch, I added some reindeers that I made out paper serviettes as well as paper star rosettes made out of magazines. The rosettes took forever to make but I'm happy with the overall look so think it was worth it. My wreath is now hanging on our front balcony keeping my pot plants company welcoming all guests! Poetry gift guides

So today's gift guide is a round up of gorgeous goodies from Poetry, one of my favourite local shops. I popped in the other day to do some gift shopping and I think I was in the store for over an hour! Purely because there were just so many perfect gift solutions and I had a serious case of indecision! I landed up getting some lovely gifts and couldn't help treating myself to this pretty dress which I've already worn and it's been declared a winner by all my friends! Here's a peak of what I bought...

Apart from lovely clothing, Poetry stocks plenty of homeware, body products, bags, jewellery and more. I know their cute cupcake set would go down so well with my sisters and that beautiful tan and blue bag would be a hit with any girlfriend!

Poetry also has so many gorgeous goodies for the foodies in your life from amazing ceramic platters and dishes to fun, colourful glassware and more. Everything is flying out of stores so I recommend you get down to your closest Poetry store as soon as possible!

It's always good when there's a birthday or celebration up ahead though so that I don't end up eating all the treats by myself! The Fringe Arts

Another great shop in Cape Town that is perfect for gift buying and is full of gorgeous goodies is The Fringe Arts in Kloof Street. The shop is refreshingly 'un-Christmassy' for this time of year, I find some shops are just too over the top and bombed out with gaudy, glitzy Christmas decor. Sometimes less really is more, don't you agree? The only Christmas feature they have is a beautiful branch decorated with jewellery and ceramic decorations that acts as a lovely natural and simple 'Christmas tree'. The shop windows currently feature beautiful hand sawn brass koi fish by Anna of Smith Jewellery. Anna has also created some Japanese inspired necklaces and cuffs which are available at shop too, so definitely make a note to pop in.

Christmas Gift Guide: Scandi loving

I wanted to put put together a Scandinavian gift guide and I thought who best to ask but my design savvy Swedish friend, Charlotta from Space for Inspiration. Charlotta has picked out some amazing gift ideas that will appeal to all Scandi lovers, enjoy!

Charlotta's picks:
* I love the jewelry by Norwegian designer Bjørg Nordli-Mathisen - the label is simply 'Bjørg'. I own a couple of lovely pieces by her, but wish to add two new necklaces to my collection - 1. the 'Feather Necklace' and 2. the 'Acorn pendant'. I would hang the 'Acorn' on the chain of the 'Feather Necklace' as I prefer Bjørg's pieces grouped together. Yum!
* Handmade 'Sami' bracelet from Lapland. Reindeer skin leather, silver thread and antler button.
* Aurora Dress by Swedish 'Odd Molly'
* I adore the ceramic works of Kerstin Tillberg. This charming and charismatic woman - who I have had the pleasure to meet - works from her studio in picturesque Mölle (where she also lives) in the South of Sweden. My mother is a friend of Kerstin's and met her when she was an anonymous independent artist - today she is very sought after and her works are collector's pieces. I would love to add to my collection of cups .
* Tall black (or orange.. yum!) lace-up rain boots by Danish designer 'Ilse Jacobsen'
* Hammered antique silver-plated or brass pots from Swedish 'Affari'.
* 'Lilla Mhy' lamp by Finnish company 'Muuto'. I adore that the design for this pendant lamp was inspired by the 'Lilla My' character in Tova Jansson's 'Moomin Troll' books. I love the books and I love the lamp!
* Dala horses - I am a collector of these hand carved and hand painted horses from the North of Sweden. I prefer the red ones, but have ones in other colours too. They look best in a cluster and my collection is growing steadily.
* Ever since I learned about Swedish Lars Bolander via Eleish Van Breems I have been wanting his book 'Scandinavian Design'

I recently discovered Lila Rose, a local Cape Town company that designs the most beautiful sleepwear. Nicola Ralph creates luxurious sleepwear aimed to compliment and flatter. Hey friends, another Monday and another week into December. Time is flying by and there is still so much to do before the end of the year! Do you feel the same way? Luckily I had a fantastic, relaxing weekend away so I'm feeling ready for a productive week ahead! We went to Arniston which is a beautiful, small fishing village just north-east of Cape Agulhas, Africa's southernmost point. This time we stayed at The Arniston Spa Hotel which was a real treat! I also ventured into the sea and had my first swim of the season! What did you all get up to?

A lovely but super busy weekend on my side of the world, how was yours? I won't bore you with all the details but I thought I'd share a few photos. One of the highlights was a trip to the Stellenbosch market which was lovely as always. I spotted some pretty floral bowls by Skermunkil which would make a lovely gift. We also had a fantastic birthday lunch yesterday at a gorgeous home, take a look at the incredible lighting! Hope you all have a good start to the week, I need to tackle my rather long 'To do' list!

Christmas style: natural simplicity

I'm not mad about over the top Christmas decor for my own home. I like a simpler look with just a few festive touches. This gorgeous home so appeals to me, I love the real Christmas tree decorated with only a few ornaments and all the greenery throughout the home. They even have a lovely wreath in the bathroom. Last week I decided to visit the newly opened Mr & Mrs Lifestyle and Design in Kloof Street and it was love at first sight. Husband and wife team, Sarah Jane and Cecil Bosman, decided to open the store after a year of traveling through Indonesia, Argentina and India. The store is a gorgeous mix of special pieces found on their travels plus fashion from fabulous local designers including Sarah's own popular label, I love Leroy. You'll find a mix of jewellery, cottons, homeware and gifting as well. The store has a lovely homey feel and is beautifully styled and put together, so make a note to visit, you won't want to leave empty handed!

Stellenbosch Christmas markets

This coming Friday and Saturday, the popular Stellenbosch Fresh Goods Market at Oude Libertas is having their annual Christmas themed market. There will be a Friday night market from 5 till 10pm and it will continue on Saturday from 9am till 2pm. Plus the brand new Treasury Market will be launching so it should be a very festive market indeed. Handmade goodness plus champagne and cupcakes at The Treasury Market on Saturday morning? Sounds fantastic, I'll be there!

Pedersen + Lennard's Bucket Stools are something I've been coveting for ages now, they are the perfect extra-seating solution for a small home or apartment. I'd love to have two or three of these in different colours, ready to whip out when extra guests pop over. You may recognise Pedersen + Lennard's work from the Old Mac Daddy luxury trailer park where they worked with decor stylist Tracy Lynch to create furniture and lighting with a very minimalistic feel yet totally functional and versatile at the same time. If you're free this coming Thursday, come down to Field Office at 5:30pm for the Pedersen + Lennard Summer 2012 launch. Plus there's a product giveaway, one of us may be lucky, here's hoping!

Bontebok bliss

I had a fantastic weekend at the Bontebok National Park just outside Swellendam. While my boyfriend and his cycling team did a 202km bike race in and around the area (yes, crazy indeed!), I enjoyed a peaceful day at the nature reserve. I went on all 3 trails and explored the park and then relaxed and swam in the Breede River. A perfect day in my books! We all camped at the campsite which is really great and very close to the river, in fact you can camp down at the river too. There are also some lovely looking self-catering chalets too. There were so many birds and tortoises to be seen and also one bontebok who was brave enough to come and graze in the campsite, so sweet! So here are a few photos of the local flora and park, enjoy!

Countryside escape

So we are off to Bontebok National Park for the weekend which is situated alongside the Breede River near Swellendam. I'm so looking forward to spending some time in nature, lets hope the weather holds. Perhaps I'll pop into Swellendam too and see what's happening there, I always love experiencing the countryside lifestyle.

These lovely photos by Hannah Blackmore sum up country style living for me. Being able to be hands on with nature and enjoy ones own fresh produce daily is really something that appeals to me. There's something to be said for rustic simplicity and a quieter lifestyle. Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Inspiring table decor

So it's Thanksgiving in the States tomorrow and of course what with the festive season up ahead, there will be plenty of dinners, parties and events to be had. I thought I'd put together some table top and decor styling inspiration for you. A few simple items I like to keep stocked up on are: mason jars, a variety of glass bottles, paper tags, paper doilies and brown kraft paper. If you have these items handy, you can pull together a very effective look in no time! Add some flowers, cutlery and crockery of course and you're good to go!

I love their Spring collection and the wonderful lookbook photography too. It really captures that happy, lazy summer feeling that is just around the corner! I'm loving the new Moroccan Princess collection from Forever New. I went to a party on Saturday night and could so have done with one of these dresses! The collection is full of fabulous rich jewel tones and has an exotic feel plus a hint of 70's glamour. So perfect for the festive party season up ahead. French Toast Wine & Tapas Bar

We have a little group that meets once a week to practise our Spanish and of course do a bit of wine sampling and eating at the same time too. So we thought we'd try a place that serves tapas as one does in Spain. We picked French Toast which is an extensive and elegant wine bar serving local and international wines and Mediterranean-style food in tapas portions. It's a beautifully decorated space with exposed brickwork and a rather industrial feel, complimented with banquette seating and some lovely decor touches. The food was delicious, I enjoyed the Patatas Bravas and Spiced sautéed calamari. I definitely recommend popping in for an after work drink and snack, it's the perfect venue for that.

Foodie blogs ~ Part I

I discovered another gorgeous food blog yesterday so I thought I'd share it with you along with some other faves. I just love a good food photography blog, not so much for the recipes (which I'm sure are excellent) but more so for their incredible styling and exceptional photography. I just find them so inspiring. These are some seriously talented ladies...

First up is Honey & Jam which is my latest discovery. Hannah is from North Georgia and is just 21 years old, she likes simple things and fresh ingredients. Her blog is amazing, go take a look.

Another favourite is roost written by Caitlin in Alabama. She follows a gluten/grain/dairy/sugar free diet and yet all of the food she prepares looks delicious. Caitlin aims to inspire and educate about this way of cooking. Caitlin is also a graphic designer and photo stylist which explains why her blog is so gorgeous.

And last but not least is Call Me Cupcake which is a Swedish blog written by Linda. Also just fantastic! Linda is working on a baking book in which she is doing the baking, styling and photography, wow, can't wait to see it!

Ikat spot design

I'm still loving the whole ikat trend and especially the 'Ikat Spot' design. It's a little more simple and more contemporary than the traditional ikat design. Definitely easier to incorporate into one's home too. I like to think of it as a fun take on the polka dot. I rather like it? What are your thoughts?

I've always had a thing for florals so I'm loving that they're so popular at the moment. It definitely seems that small floral prints are the flavour of the day but I do love the larger prints too which have more of an old world feel to them. Isn't this dress below just so gorgeous?

Today I thought I'd take you on a tour of this Beverly Hills estate belonging to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi. It's not quite my personal style but I do think their home is beautifully put together and decorated. There are so many interesting sculptural pieces and artworks and plenty of natural wooden elements too. I love the mix of modern with traditional classics. The highlight for me though, is the giant bathtub overlooking a private garden, wow, what a serene space. A really lovely home, don't you agree? See more of it here. Cake disaster

Today I had planned on sharing a tasty recipe plus photos but since the cake was a bit of a flop, it's just photos! Orange and Lime Polenta cake was what I attempted but unfortunately it just didn't work out well at all. So I won't be repeating it or sharing the recipe. Nevermind the cake still looked pretty, so we had fun styling and taking photos. A little bit of lace and fresh flowers are all you need for a quick styling fix.

I love this Vogue Australia editorial featuring Isabel Lucas, shot in the Kalahari desert. Ok maybe it's the little meerkats that stole my heart! I love the dusty Kalahari as a backdrop for all the fabulous fashion but please bear in mind, this is not how you would ever dress if you went to an African game lodge! Still, a really great, fun shoot. And isn't that baobab tree incredible?

Branding 10,000 Lakes

I'm working on two websites at the moment so I've been doing lots of website browsing to get ideas and inspiration. In the process I came across such a cool project, so I thought I'd share it with you. Nicole Meyer is an art director who has recently started a project which aims to brand one Minnesota lake a day. Did you know there are more than 10 000 of them?!

Nicole says,

"Lake logos have a tendency to be, well, fairly ugly. This project was created to rethink what they could be.

One Minnesota Lake. One Logo. Every day.

Should only take a little over 27 years to hit 'em all. Stay tuned and enjoy!"

I love the idea that she has taken on such a big project, I mean... a logo a day for 27 years is huge dedication! I also really enjoyed seeing her interpretation of the lake names and the logos she created. Really brilliant, take a look and see them all of them so far on Branding 10,000 Lakes.
